Questions about our AFM translator module for classic engines

What is MAFsync?

MAFsync is an airflow meter translator module. It sits between a modern hot-wire MAF sensor and your factory ECU, precisely translating the modern sensor's signal into the exact voltage curve your ECU expects. The result is a clean, stable idle, improved throttle response, and proper fueling, all without touching the ECU or reflashing anything.

Does MAFsync only work on BMWs?

No. Ready-to-ship profiles are for BMW M20, M40, M42 and M43 engines, but MAFsync works with any car that uses the same kind of vane (flap) airflow meter, such as Bosch L-Jetronic and Motronic systems found on many 80s and 90s Porsche, Volvo, VW, Nissan and Toyota models. A profile for your engine can be built using the MAFSync DataLogger Kit. Send your engine and ECU details to confirm it's a fit.

Why would I need this?

Original mechanical vane-type airflow meters (AFMs) are bulky, restrictive, and increasingly hard to find. Even working original units can eventually develop track wear and dead spots. MAFsync lets you replace that older technology with a modern, reliable hot-wire MAF sensor to future-proof your engine.

Does it modify or reflash my ECU?

No. MAFsync works inline. It plugs directly in between the sensor and the ECU. The factory ECU itself is never touched, modified, or reflashed. This makes the upgrade fully reversible: unplug it, reinstall your original AFM, and the car is entirely back to stock.

Will it throw codes or cause a check engine light?

No. Because MAFsync translates the signal accurately, the ECU sees exactly what it expects to see. There are no additional codes introduced by MAFsync itself. If codes are present after installation, they are likely pre-existing engine faults.

Do I still need a tune after installing MAFsync?

No. Each unit is pre-loaded and locked with a calibration profile specific to your exact engine and ECU combination before it ships. You do not need a dyno tune, ECU reflash, or any calibration adjustments on your end. It is truly plug-and-play.

Which engines does it support right now?

Fully supported and ready to order now: BMW M42B18, M40B18, M43B18 (7-pin 4-cylinder platforms) and M20B25, M20B27, M20B20 (5-pin 6-cylinder platforms). The M30 and M10 are in active development. Don't see your engine? Sign up on the MAFSync page and we'll email you as soon as a profile for it is ready, or use the MAFSync DataLogger Kit to log your engine so we can build a profile for it.

What MAF sensor does it use?

The Full Kit ($379) includes a pre-matched Bosch hot-wire MAF sensor, calibrated precisely for that exact sensor's flow characteristics. The Module + Harness option ($295) does not include the sensor, so you'll need your own Bosch 1.8T HFM5 (70mm), part 06A906461A / Bosch 0280218002. Using a different sensor than what the module is calibrated for will affect accuracy and isn't recommended.

Is this street legal?

As with any engine management modification (such as popular MAF conversions for Porsche and other classic platforms), emissions compliance depends entirely on your local and provincial/state laws. MAFsync is a performance module and has not been CARB-certified or submitted for federal emissions testing. It is the buyer's responsibility to verify legality and ensure compliance with their local regulations before installation.

How long does it take to ship?

Every unit is built to order, so please allow up to 30 days, plus transit time. Each one is hand-assembled, flashed, and bench-tested before it leaves our shop. You'll get a shipping notification with tracking the moment your unit is on its way.

My engine isn't on the list. Can you build one for it?

Possibly! If your ECU uses a similar vane AFM signal architecture, it may be supportable. Reach out with your engine and ECU details before ordering and we'll let you know if it's possible. If it's not currently supported, we'll add your platform to our development list.
